What is the difference between Tally, Odoo and a custom ERP?
Tally is accounting software with inventory features, widely used in South Asia. Odoo is an open-source ERP with dozens of modules you install and configure. A custom ERP is built specifically for your company's processes.
How do they compare?
| Â | Tally | Odoo | Custom ERP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Accounting, VAT, simple stock | Standard business processes | Your specific workflows |
| Time to start | Days | Weeks to months | Weeks to months |
| Cost pattern | Licence per installation | Per-user subscription or self-hosting plus implementation | Upfront build, then optional support |
| Flexibility | Low | Medium; deep changes need developers | High |
| Ownership | Licence | Licence or open source | You own the code |
| Web and mobile access | Limited | Yes | Built in, including your own app |
When is Tally enough?
If your main need is bookkeeping, VAT and basic stock, and a few people use the system from one office, Tally is quick and familiar. It becomes limiting when you need branch-level stock, production tracking, a sales pipeline or access from phones.
When does Odoo make sense?
Odoo works well when your processes match its modules with light configuration. Budget for an implementation partner, and check how per-user costs grow as your team does. Heavy customisation can make upgrades harder.
When should you build a custom ERP?
- Your workflow is a competitive advantage that a package would force you to change.
- You need the ERP tied closely to your online store, app or factory floor.
- Licence fees for a growing team are becoming a large recurring cost.
- You want to own the software and decide its roadmap.
Softxen has built custom ERPs such as MG ERP for Maraya Global and the WallFloorBD ERP. See our ERP development service for how we approach a build.
How should you decide?
- Write down your five most important daily workflows.
- Check which option handles each one without workarounds.
- Compare five-year cost, not only year-one cost.
- Ask how data gets in, and how you would get it out later.
